Cross-Border Art Project ‘Birds Without Paradise’ Now on Display at Seaport Village
They began in Oaxaca before traveling to Calle Segunda in Tijuana, followed by San Diego’s Liberty Station neighborhood. Now, they have migrated to Seaport Village. Installed on Friday, February 8, Birds Without Paradise is the latest public art installation available for all to enjoy at San Diego’s storied Seaport Village.
The beginning of a broader collaboration between Seaport Village and the San Diego Unified School District’s Visual and Performing Arts programs – Birds Without Paradise is an art project led by Oaxacan artist Manuel Molina designed to promote cultural and economic cooperation within the San Diego and Baja mega-region.
With the assistance of school children and volunteers on both sides of the border, Molina led the creation of more than 100 birds made out of indigenous materials such as corn husks, and more than 350 schoolchildren painted the life-sized birds. Now currently hanging above the main fountain area of Seaport Village, the brilliant Birds Without Paradise will be on display through April.
